Resource Description

The power of prefixes, re-, pre-, mis-

The teaching of common prefixes (and suffixes) aligns with word recognition and language comprehension, helping students with their reading, writing, and literacy skills.

Prefixes are word parts that precede a root (or base) word, changing the meaning of that word. Prefixes themselves, have meaning. By selecting three commonly used potent prefixes, this 22-page resource will boost a student’s vocabulary quickly while, at the same time, making unfamiliar English words less frightening.

The carefully designed instruction is explicitly set out, engaging learners from the outset. The material consists of varied activities including, but not limited to, the introduction of prefixes and ‘root words’, grammar worksheets, gap-fill sentences, word meanings, and the identification of both prefixes and root words.

Adding fuel to the challenge is the existence of words that appear to contain prefixes. Examples are: ‘read’, ‘mister’, ‘preach’. These words are prefix imposters! Students are guided to spot the ‘imposters’.

Threaded throughout the learning are elements of fun such as ‘text reading’, quizzing, cut-out cards, rhyming words, and a ‘playing with prefixes’ game.
