Resource Description

This page is a worksheet to help learners see the rules about numbering in Afrikaans. It also leads on into a second lesson on telling the time in Afrikaans. If you have a clock (strongly recommended) then use this visual with the worksheet which helps pupils to learn ‘unusual’ aspects such as saying ‘half een’ when it is half past twelve. The numbers and hyphens in Afrikaans numbers are also explained, as well as irregular rules such as agt, tagtig and ‘neëntig’ etc.

These words can be written on a board and the actual corresponding digits scattered on another side of the board. You can ask pupils to come up one at a time to link the digit to the numbers, thereafter, erase the lines and do it all again (this time in the form of a little class competition (maybe girls vs boys?). This is a fun way to learn the numbers and they do not even realise that the info is being reinforced into the memory banks!

Can be used for all grades as a first time learning resource or as revision up to and including Gr12.
