Resource Description

The -TION, -SION, and -CIAN word endings are grouped together primarily because they all end with the /SHUN/ sound. Fair enough, they sound the same: what’s the catch? It’s all about the spelling and ensuing changed word meanings!

The challenge for our Learners’ is that not only are these words spelt differently, but when these endings are used as suffixes, the word meanings and part of speech (their ‘job’) change. Although this seems a lot to take on board, it is explicitly explained and revised in the first two pages and consolidated throughout the product.

This 16-page booklet aims to elevate young students to a level where they are comfortably confident with the spellings and resultant word forms. The product is fully guided, beginning by addressing the ”WHY?” (of the grouping) in simple terms. Root words and suffixes are explored, accompanied by sample words and sentences.

This solid foundation is supported with engaging worksheets, visual cues and tips, word meanings, the changed words and gap-fill sentences. Cut-out cards are included to facilitate revision and retention. The many-page document ensures ample spelling practice underpinned by an understanding of word meanings and word changes.

This product has been carefully designed to provide an effective and thorough learning journey.

Suitable for: grades 3 to 5, ESL and home-schooling.
