Short-A Word Family: ACK, AND, ANK, ASH

Young learners have a natural inclination to discover patterns. This bodes well for our ‘spelling with patterns’ series! Word families are groups of words that follow a similar pattern.

This 15-page product focuses on the most common of the short-vowel A word families: -ACK, -AND, -ANK and -ASH. Page 1 introduces the term ‘Word Family’ following up with an appropriate revision of all short vowel sounds.

The material is fully guided with explicit instruction and bursting at the seams with engaging activities. These include ‘choose the word’, gap-fill sentences, word meanings and ‘correct the spelling’ exercises. The Word Search, Crazy Rhymes and the ‘Challenge’ page serve to embed the spellings. Visual imagery is used throughout the material and students are encouraged to approach the learning in a multi-sensory fashion.

The ‘challenge page’ incorporates self-discovery learning, prompting students to unearth an additional two ‘short-vowel A’ families:  -ACT and -ANG.

Rhyming is a powerful tool. Learners generally enjoy rhymes, building phonemic awareness as they pay attention to the sound of words.

Cut-out cards are handy for revision and reference purposes. Suggestion: print the cards on stiff paper or board, and laminate them for durability.

Suitable for: grades 2 to 3, ESL and home-schooling. Depending on individual student level and purpose, the product could also be used by both older and younger learners.

Enjoy short-A!
